Who’s on Your Personal Board? The CEO Mindset for Your Life and Career

How senior leaders can take back the reins and build intentional support around them

Are You Leading Your Life - or Letting It Lead You?

Ever feel like you’ve lost momentum, purpose, or direction? Even high-performing executives and ambitious professionals can hit a period where they feel unanchored. It’s more common than you think.

A few years ago, I found myself in that place - stuck, uncertain, and misaligned from the life I knew I wanted. Then someone asked me a deceptively powerful question:

Who is on your Personal Board? Are you the CEO of the organisation called your life?

It shifted everything.

The Concept: You Are the CEO of You Inc.

Just like a business, your life needs a vision, a strategy, and a strong leadership team. The CEO role? That’s you. But even the best CEOs don’t go it alone - they have a board of advisors.

Your Personal Board is the group of trusted people who challenge your thinking, guide your decisions, and keep you accountable. This isn’t about having one mentor. It’s about surrounding yourself with a diverse mix of people who support and stretch you across the key areas of your life—career, health, relationships, finances, and personal development.

How to Build Your Personal Board

Creating a personal board is less about formality and more about intentionality. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Map Your Table
Picture a boardroom table with seats around it. Who currently has influence in your life? Are they helping you grow, or holding you back?

  2. Define the Roles
Think about the kinds of support you need. Maybe it's strategic career insight, emotional encouragement, financial expertise, or simply someone who calls you out when you’re playing small.

  3. Choose With Purpose
Fill those seats with people who bring different strengths, lived experiences, and perspectives. You want challenge and support, not just agreement.

Remember, this board doesn’t need to meet formally. It’s about identifying whose voices matter and making sure they reflect the kind of life and leadership you want to embody.

Why This Matters for Senior Leaders

Leaders often spend so much time supporting others that they neglect their own development ecosystem. But you can’t lead others effectively if you’re not leading yourself with intention.

When you start acting as the CEO of your own life, decisions become clearer, boundaries become easier to hold, and your actions align more closely with your long-term goals—not just today’s demands.
